Health should not only be the absence of disease but feeling
full of vitality!!!
- when (oh when!?) did we start settling for anything less??
There
is a word which is creeping into our everyday vocabularies …
slowly … slowly …. ‘holistic’. It is
being splashed about on business cards, health products, magazine
pages and on salon and clinic windows. Marketing people too
are starting to awaken to its power. So why exactly is this
word gaining in popularity??
Holistic Health
Holistic Health is the understanding that Human beings are more
than just physical bodies- we harbour emotions, have thoughts,
nurture souls, live within families, within communities and
a society which is in itself dependent on the health of the
environment. ‘Holistic’ comes from the Greek word
‘Holos’ – meaning ‘whole’. It
was coined in 1926 by the statesman and naturalist, Jan Smuts.
‘Holistic’ is not only restricted to healthcare
but also used by people who want a more humane and well-rounded
approach to such topics as education, spirituality and politics:
to create healthy and whole communities – local and global.
As the worlds populations continue to tame their environments,
producing concrete jungles and becoming more and more urbanised,
we are losing touch with the natural order. Holistic health
& healing encompasses a whole person philosophy: looking
after a person in their entirety. MIND – BODY –
SPIRIT : The Trinity. Those three trendy words. But, when talking
about a persons health, oh! The power that these three words
hold when united together!!
A holistic approach to life
A holistic approach to life is dynamic and forever changing.
Demands in a persons life and their requirements can often change
from week to week, let alone month to year. What suited you
then, may not suit you now.
Anyone entrusted to heal should strive to encourage the innate
ability of the individual in distress to restore balance and
harmony.
Did you know that in ancient China the doctor of the village
was paid by its people when they were healthy! When they were
sick they did not need to pay(!!!) ….. it was therefore,
obviously, in the doctors best interest to ensure that the villagers
were all enjoying prime health!! Now this is truly a ‘healthcare’
system huh?
The
face of illness is changing.
The
face of illness is changing. ‘Civilised life’ has
produced ‘civilised diseases’.
- In the UK it is stated that one in three people are developing
cancer at some stage in their life. Certain cancer charities
believe that this will soon become one in every two people.
- Crohns’ Disease did not even have a name until 1932
and still in eastern countries and Africa its prevalence is
hardly seen and only now starting due to the slow adoption of
a western processed diet.
- This is not even mentioning the next great epidemics: obesity,
child obesity, diabetes, auto-immune diseases and the meteoric
rise in allergies due to toxic man made chemicals that our bodies
just simply cannot process and do not know what to do with.
“A
whole is always more than the sum of its parts. All life is
inter-connected. Nothing can be fully understood unless we see
the whole system of which it is a part. Life is dynamic and
forever changing. Random elements are continually emerging and
self-organising to form coherent wholes.” - William Bloom

The
Way Forward.
Unfortunately there is a big division between the conventional
medicine and the natural medicine worlds with only a rickety
bridge attempting to unite the two approaches. There seems to
be little communication and much distrust, which is a real shame.
For the individual patient and all mankind to ultimately thrive,
both sides need to set aside their insecurities, stretch out
the hand of friendship and begin to get really excited in what
the ‘other side’ can teach them.
I
urge each of you to establish for yourself a good working network
of local professionals in your area who happily communicate,
take interest and co-operate together for the good of YOUR health.
Don’t worry about being shy, freely ask them what their
viewpoint is with regards to the holistic/conventional medical
worlds, and try to select professionals who will serve you well.
The
good news is the face of medicine is slowly changing and integrated
medical schools are beginning to surface worldwide. Until that
day however…. Enjoy the emergence of being involved in
a new way of thinking, enjoying the best of both worlds! :-) |
